Plumbing issues can strike at the worst possible time, and many Essex homes, especially older properties, have pipework and fixtures that are long overdue a check-up. As a local Essex handyman specialising in plumbing, I’m regularly called out to fix problems that could have been spotted much earlier with a quick inspection.

Here are the top seven plumbing issues affecting homes across Essex and how to identify them before they turn into costly repairs.

1. Flow Rate and Water Pressure.

If your shower feels weaker than it used to or your radiators take ages to heat up, flow and water pressure may be to blame. Essex hard water, like the type we have in Chelmsford, can cause limescale build-up, especially in older homes, which restricts flow.

2. Blocked Plugholes and Slow Drains

Bad smells coming from your plughole? A slow-moving drain is one of the first red flags of a blockage. This usually starts as a minor build-up before becoming something more unpleasant.

3. Dripping Taps

A small drip may not seem like much, but over a week it can waste litres of water - and increase your bill. Often caused by worn washers, which can be replaced easily, give me a ring if there’s a constant dripping tap in your home.

4. Leaking Pipes

Pipes hidden under sinks or behind appliances often develop small leaks long before they become visible. Keep an eye out for damp patches or musty smells to try and detect them early.

5. Toilet Not Flushing Properly

A toilet that only half-flushes or takes several attempts is more than an inconvenience. It might need a plumber to replace some worn out internal components.

6. Noisy Pipes (‘Water Hammer’)

Banging or rattling when turning taps on or off or flushing the loo is a common issue in Victorian and older Essex homes. No you’ve not suddenly got a ghost -it’s often due to loose pipes or trapped air.

7. Boiler Pressure Issues

Many homes rely on combi boilers, and pressure drops are a frequent call-out. Early signs include radiators not heating properly or the boiler cutting out. But don’t worry - it’s often fixable with simple maintenance.

If you’ve noticed one or more of these issues, it’s worth getting them checked before they escalate. As an Essex-based handyman with plumbing expertise, I can diagnose the problem quickly and carry out cost-effective repairs.
